Text to Speech Software and Accessibility for Academics

6/10/2021

There will be 3 types of software/ products discussed here.
1. Text to speech engines, platforms, and programs that actually do the reading of text out loud to you.
2. The voice downloads, packages, programs, and add-ons that improve base text-to-speech programs that typically come with the most basic "Voice" (often Microsoft Sam or David).
3. Optical character recognition (OCR) programs that turn pictures of text into readable documents. Many, but not all, pdf's and other files are technically just "pictures" of words. Sometimes they also have Digital rights management (DRM) or copyright blocks on the text so it is not readable and cannot have its text ripped easily.

Templates and Printouts

Here I am providing templates, printouts, and documents that I use in teaching and other academic writing endeavors. My hope is that these make your lives easier, providing you with resources I had to come up with on my own.
NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Awards Word document template:
The final form doesn't really look anything like this, however, this will help you organize all the different pages you need ahead of time.
NSF DDRI TEMPLATE
Archaeological Lab or HIstorical Project template:
Any organized outline and paper formatted in Word appropriate for museum, archaeological, and classical essay assignments and reports. I used this in preparation for a NAGPRA related inventory to collect all the background information for the PI.
Project Outline
Wenner Gren
For 2021 The Wenner Gren Foundation has a slightly different application for dissertation research grants. I made a sort of template to help one get started. Unlike some other applications, everything is paste into the online portal. I encourage any applicant to make a profile as soon as they can as you will see the rules in detail there. There is no clear template or resource as clear as the submission portal itself. You can save your work as you go and do not need to send the day you start. In the meantime, here is a sort of "template" to get you started.

Mentoring and Advising Tips

I developed this reference document for students drafting mentoring and advisement contracts with advisers, PI's, committee chairs, and mentors. Here are suggested points of agreement you should feel empowered to discuss with your adviser or mentor. There are also suggested ways of approaching sensitive subjects with advisers and establishing rules that protect the mentee in a power imbalance. This list can also be helpful for advisers in establishing fair, respectful, two-way guidelines that protect both parties and make clear responsibilities and expectations. I have also included a blank mentorship plan that you can use in conjunction with the reference document.

What is a mentoring plan?
A mentoring plan is a way to clarify and formalize a relationship between a mentor and mentee. It is a reference document where mentor and mentee agree on their mutual commitments during the period they work together. A mentoring agreement can enrich the mentor-mentee relationship by providing clear expectations, honest communication, goals and deadlines, and professional boundaries. It gives both (though often the least empowered person especially -commonly the student) a widely accepted practice to point to in showing that their agreements and expectations are not unreasonable or unusual and they should expect certain standards and respect.

I recently submitted my first book review and first article for publication. While I had many helpful mentors throughout the process there are multiple things no one ever told me that I want to pass on to you. Below I hope to provide you with tips I that got me through the process. I will also provide templates that I think will be helpful. I will update this post as I think of new things. I hope this helps! -Tisa
