When you submit a research article

I recently submitted my first book review and first article for publication. While I had many helpful mentors throughout the process there are multiple things no one ever told me that I want to pass on to you. Below I hope to provide you with tips I that got me through the process. I will also provide templates that I think will be helpful. I will update this post as I think of new things. I hope this helps! -Tisa

Things I did not know:

  • The editors are not the same as the reviewers. You should initially email the editors, let them know about your submission and if needed, ask if it is appropriate for their journal. They may even look it over for you before you submit. The editor is not a blind reviewer.
  • When you submit an article through the online portal (such as Wiley) you still need to write a cover letter.
  • When you submit an article through the online portal (such as Wiley) you need a title page as well.
  • When you respond to reviewers, you need to write a response and sometimes annotate (track notes) the original work with replies to each review comment. See the provided file for some help on this.

Answers to my most earnest questions:

Q Can you submit to different journals in succession (not all at once)?
A Yes! Sometimes after submitting a journal may even recommend you submit elsewhere if they feel it fits better there.

Q What is a running head?
A A running head is a short version of the title that goes at the top of pages in an article or book. It does not have to be exactly like the title but usually avoids things like colons, semicolons and other complexities that may be in the title.
See the templates page for examples of title pages and cover sheets.
